“Do I need both SEO and GEO?” New terminology can make the first step feel unclear. Start by comparing the questions customers ask with the answers your business has published.
This guide focuses on discovery in search and AI answers. For the full customer journey, read the website overview. For what happens after a visit, see the inquiry guide.
What SEO and GEO look at
| Term | Main focus | Question to check |
|---|---|---|
| SEO · Search engine optimization | How pages are found, understood and shown in search. | Does the right page appear for the service a customer needs? |
| GEO · Generative engine optimization | Business mentions, descriptions and citations in AI answers. | When is your information presented accurately? |
Google describes its AI search features as building on established search foundations. You can work on SEO while reviewing how your business appears in AI answers. Google’s explanation should not be treated as a description of every AI platform.
Both connect to information that helps customers. Start with the services, areas and conditions your staff can explain consistently.
Match business details across channels
Familiar details can be important selection criteria for a customer. If Korean consultation is available, say through which channel. If you offer on-site service, explain the actual service area.
- Name, location and contact: Compare your website, map profile and directory listings.
- Service scope: Distinguish current services from requests that need a discussion.
- Language and booking: Explain actual language availability and appointment routes.
- Changes: Update relevant pages when hours, locations or services change.
Google’s local ranking guidance emphasizes accurate, complete business information and explains relevance, distance and prominence. Updating information does not produce the same ranking in every location.
Describe where you really work rather than adding a broad area you cannot serve. If your Kobizmap details need a correction, use the listing and update request route.
Turn recurring questions into useful service descriptions
Write down what you explain repeatedly during inquiries. Your knowledge of the conditions customers worry about is useful material. These examples show an approach; they are not instructions from actual businesses.
| Customer’s question | Content to prepare | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| “Do I need a consultation before a perm?” | When a consultation is needed and how booking works. | The actual menu and appointment process. |
| “Can you repair a dent from a collision?” | Mechanical versus body work and how to send photos. | The services currently offered. |
| “What should I bring to an accounting consultation?” | Preparation for the purpose of the meeting and a secure submission route. | The office’s intake process. |
Help readers answer the next practical question. Verify uncertain details before publishing, and use real work photos or explanations where appropriate. Separate pages are useful when they explain meaningful differences, rather than just repeating text with another city name.
An appearance in an answer is different from a visit
Pew Research Center’s 2025 study analyzed March browsing data from 900 U.S. adults. People clicked a traditional result in 8% of Google visits with an AI summary, compared with 15% without one.
The study compared browsing records with search results collected again in April. It was observational, not an experiment that changed only the summary, and it does not describe current click rates for Korean community businesses. It is a useful reason to separate visibility from visits.
- 01MentionThe answer names the business.
- 02CitationA source links to your page.
- 03VisitA person opens the website.
- 04InquiryThey check the conditions and contact you.
People may skip steps or switch channels. Someone who reads a business name in an AI answer and then calls from a map will not necessarily appear in your website journey.
Record observations with consistent context
For search, review impressions and clicks by page. For AI answers, choose a small set of realistic customer questions and record the platform, date, language, location context and cited sources. One answer is not a fixed ranking.
Google introduced Search Console’s generative AI performance reports in 2026. The announcement lists impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates. Do not add these impressions to overall performance when they are already included there.
Review identifiable AI referrals and completed inquiries separately. Apps and missing referral information can limit attribution. When traffic is small, use the observations to identify unclear questions or pages instead of claiming a large conversion improvement.
Begin with one service
Choose a main service and write down three recent customer questions. Check whether the page answers them, compare your map and directory details, then follow the contact route on a phone.
Use the website checklist to organize the work. It connects discovery in search and AI answers with what a visitor needs to do next.
